Keshi (Japanese for ‘poppy seed’) pearls are entirely composed of nacre, having no nucleus bead so they tend to have a higher lustre. Nacre laid down in the oyster shell is a combination of calcium carbonate and protein which is both lighter and stronger than concrete. They can be cultivated in all types of clams.
Pearls generally can take up to 7 years to form. It is thought that a pearl of value is found in less than 1 in 10,000 wild pearl oyster. To see more pictures visit:
